NLIHC Report: Nation Has Shortage of 7.1 Million Rental Homes Affordable, Available for ELI Renters

FROM NOVOGRADAC

The United States has a shortage of 7.1 million rental homes that are affordable and available to extremely low-income (ELI) renters, according to The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Homes, the annual report released March 13 by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC). The report says there are just 35 affordable and available homes for every 100 ELI renter households. Only North Dakota (with 62) has more than 60 such homes available per 100 ELI households and seven states have fewer than 30 such homes available. No major metropolitan area has an adequate supply of such homes for ELI renters. The 7.1 million rental home shortage is a slight drop from the record 7.3 million in the 2023 and 2024 reports.
